The University of Wisconsin (UW Cytogenetic Services) is currently seeking an Assistant Director.   This position serves as the Assistant Director of the Cytogenetics section of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, reporting to the Director of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics sections and the Disease Prevention Division Director. This section is a full service cytogenetic laboratory processing prenatal, constitutional, and oncology specimens for chromosome and molecular cytogenetic analysis as well as a wide range of molecular assays in conjunction with the molecular genetics section. The laboratory participates in international, national, and local research collaborations and clinical trials and is home to the University of Wisconsin's American Board of Medical Genetics Fellowships in Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics. 


The duties of the Assistant Director include providing technical oversight, preparation and review of cytogenetic case reports, client consultation, assay development, and undergraduate/graduate/professional teaching/training. This position is a resource to the Unit Manager, section supervisors and approximately 20 FTE's. As Assistant Director, this position will carry out method development and research activities related to the WSLH service and public health mission.

Occupational Summary:
Perform complex technical work involving cytogenetic analysis of human biological material. Cytogenetics position: Cytogenomics

Our Cytogenetics Laboratory located on the University of Minnesota, East bank is one of the few laboratories in the state to offer microarray testing. Microarrays are bridging the gap between conventional cytogenetics and molecular biology.  Currently microarray testing is applied to detect abnormalities that may underline developmental disabilities, congenital anomalies as well as detect DNA aberrations associated with cancer.  The laboratory plays an important role in diagnosis of genetic disorders and in differential diagnosis of cancer subtypes.

The full time Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) position in the cytogenetics laboratory will include the performance of microarrays.  The selected candidate will perform other duties within the cytogenetics laboratory beyond microarrays such as G-band analysis, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and tissue culture.

Training will be provided, experience is preferred.

This position is in a clinical laboratory focused on patient care. The CLS will perform complex laboratory testing according to established procedures in an accurate and reliable manner.

Schedule: M-F, with weekend/holiday rotation.

Duties will likely include:

  • Microarrays: DNA isolation and quantification, DNA restriction enzyme digestion, DNA labeling and processing of microarrays, analysis of microarray findings using analytical software, report generation of microarray findings and result entry into laboratory reporting system, QC of new reagents, preventative maintenance of equipment, supply ordering and support development of new technologies.
  • G-Band Analysis: Tissue culture and chromosome preparation, microscope analysis and karyotyping of G-banded cells.
